This, too, is a tribute to the Hope Diamond.

But this time, what we were reaching for was not the Hope Diamond as the world knows it today.

Most people are unaware that, across its long and turbulent history, the Hope Diamond was once stolen — and vanished from the historical record entirely.

The Hope Diamond we are familiar with today is the stone as it appeared after it was recut.

In certain historical sources, there exists a drawing from a gem merchant’s manuscript — believed to depict the diamond as it looked before it was stolen and recut.

Regrettably, no photograph of the stone from that era survives.

So no one truly knows what it looked like before the blade touched it again.

What remains is only a possibility — a single sketch, a suggestion of a shape that may or may not have existed.

This diamond begins from that possibility.

Drawing on historical manuscripts and scholarly speculation about the stone’s earlier form, we set out to reimagine the Hope Diamond that disappeared into history.

Of course, this is not the real Hope Diamond.

We cannot even prove that the original ever truly held this shape.

So we prefer to call it something else —

Fantasy Hope.
